Probiotics to replenish microflora and deter candida albicans

Probiotics are simply microorganisms taken orally to improve our natural gastrointestinal microflora. As a result probiotic claim to improve diarrhea, constipation, gas and bloating.  They have only become prevalent in the United State relatively recently, but have been generally accepted as beneficial much earlier in Europe and South America. Early formulations required refrigeration and even cold packing even for the trip from the health food store to home.  Now shelf stable formula are common. But not all probiotics are the same. A large variety of strength and strain options exist. Some  include a prebiotic, which is food for the microorganisms. Yet beware many prebiotics will also feed candida albicans. So those that have long-term fungal infections should avoid or use prebiotics sparingly. Probiotics are important because as the candida albicans dies off one wants to claim the freed up gut real estate by encouraging beneficial flora to grow there. Thus providing an obstacle for regrowth.

Biofilms form when free flowing yeast cells produce a sticky polymeric substance which allows them to congeal. This globular formation can put down roots in the form of mycelium. The biofilm help the yeast purge waste and share food essentially turning it into a small colony. The biofilms themselves seem to have enhanced resistance to both herbs and pharmaceuticals anti-fungal. This layer of extracellular matrix differs considerable from the cell wall of pathogen itself. As a result it becomes a klingon cloaking device to the body’s immune response. After time the biofilms will have a dispersion of hyphae cells which will spread the yeast and may lead to a systemic infection once in the bloodstream.

Once the candida albicans is in retreat glutamine is necessary to repair and restore the lining of the intestinal tract. Several great formulations use this amino acid needed to rebuild the rapidly regenerating cells, which use it it increase signaling pathways for regeneration and simulate growth factors. Some some formulations add herbs or extracts to provide complimentary benefits. Do to both the regenerative and anti-inflammatory aspects these formula are used for treatment of Crohn’s and IBD, as well as candida albicans.
